A "ghost light" is a single, bare electric bulb left burning on the stage of a theatre when the building is empty and dark.
Practical Uses:
Safety: It lets people see the edge of the stage, stairs, and the orchestra pit so they do not fall.
Guidance: It helps the first person who arrives in the morning find the switches for the main work lights.
Gas History: In the 19th century, leaving a small gas flame burning prevented dangerous pressure from building up in the gas lines.
Superstitions and Lore
Happy Ghosts: Theater tradition says every stage has a ghost. The light gives spirits a way to see and "perform" after hours, keeping them happy so they do not curse future shows.
Ward Off Spirits: Some believe the glow keeps mischievous or angry dark spirits away from the property.
